Hide a shipping rate at the Shopify checkout

How to take a rate off the checkout only when it is wrong, for example above a cart total, without deleting it from your shipping settings.

The case

You have a rate that works nearly every time. Then a cart turns up where it does not work at all: the big part the 6.90 € courier will not carry, the sofa that only ships on a pallet.

You still need the rate, just not for that cart. Deleting it from the zone is too much, because it goes away for every other order too.

Example

You sell car parts. "Standard delivery" at 6.90 € is right for a gasket, not for a 12 kg alternator. Above 200 € a cart nearly always holds something heavy, so from there up you want to leave only "Dedicated transport".

With Shopify alone

In Settings, Shipping and delivery you build zones, and rates inside each zone. A flat rate can have a minimum and a maximum, based on the order amount or on the weight. That is how "Free shipping" shows up only from 50 € up.

That is where it stops. You cannot take a rate off by postcode, by a product in the cart or by the customer. And every edit counts for everyone: to make a rate disappear you delete it from the zone.

With a rule

This rule fits the free plan, because it looks only at the cart total.

01

Open the app and click New rule. The name is for you: "No standard from 200 € up".

02

Under What to do, pick Hide the rates.

03

Leave Which rates on The rate with exactly this name. In Value, write the name the way it reads in Settings, Shipping and delivery: "Standard delivery". Capital letters and extra spaces do not matter.

04

Under When the rule applies, type 200 in Cart total from (€). Leave the rest empty, because the conditions you fill in all have to hold at once.

05

Press Save the rule and build a test cart from 200 € up. The rate is gone. Below 200 € it is still there.

06

If that is not what you wanted, press Turn off in the list of rules. The checkout goes back to your Shopify rates.

What it does not do

A rule changes what the customer sees at the checkout. In Shopify nothing changes.

It does not calculate shipping prices. The prices stay the ones you write in your rates.

It does not use weight. If your heavy parts carry a tag, on the Pro plan the rule can look at the product tag instead of the total.

It prints no labels and connects to no courier.

It never touches profiles, zones or rates. Delete the rule and Shopify is as it was.

If you hide every rate of a zone, the customer has nothing left to pick and cannot finish the order. Always leave an alternative.
