A higher free shipping threshold for the islands

Shopify sets free shipping above a cart total by itself. A rule starts it higher only where your courier costs you more, such as the small islands.

The case

From 59 € up you ship for free, and for most of Italy the numbers work. Then an order of 62 € comes in for Capri. Your courier charges 12 € more for the small islands, and that free shipping comes out of your pocket.

You do not want to drop the threshold. You want it to start higher on the islands.

Example

"Standard courier" costs 6.90 € and "Free shipping" shows from 59 € up. On the small islands you want it only from 120 €. With a cart of 80 €, Bologna ships free and Capri sees only "Standard courier" at 6.90 €.

With Shopify alone

The threshold is something Shopify does on its own. Under Settings > Shipping and delivery, add a 0 € rate to the zone, then Add conditions, Based on order price, with a minimum of 59 €. If the threshold is the same for everyone, you do not need an app. Ours included.

The limit is the zone. The condition reads the order's price or weight and holds across the whole zone, and zones are made of countries and provinces. For the whole of Sicily and Sardinia you can build a zone from their provinces with a threshold of its own. Not for the small islands: Capri and Ischia sit in the province of Naples, Elba in Livorno's, and a zone does not go down to the postcode.

With a rule

The rule hides the free rate on the islands while the cart stays under 120 €. Postcode conditions are on the Starter plan.

01

In Shopify, leave "Standard courier" without a maximum. Above 59 € the islands still need it: if it went there too, Capri would be left with no rate at all.

02

Open the app, click New rule and call it "Small islands: free from 120 €".

03

Under What to do, pick Hide the rates. Leave Which rates on The rate with exactly this name and write "Free shipping" in Value. A yellow warning appears because the rate reads as free: here that is the point.

04

Under When the rule applies, press Small islands and the Venice lagoon. The postcodes of Elba, Ischia, Capri and the lagoon, among others, land in the fields, plus Livigno and Campione d'Italia. Check them against your courier's list.

05

Write IT in Countries. A postcode alone does not say which country: without IT, an 80073 somewhere else would set the rule off too.

06

Write 120 in Cart total below (€). It is exclusive: the rule holds up to 119.99 €, and from 120 € free shipping comes back in Capri too.

07

Press Save the rule and try a cart of 80 € for Capri and one for Bologna. The first shows only "Standard courier", the second does not change.

08

For the same threshold in Sicily and Sardinia, press those two buttons as well, in the same rule. For a bulky item instead of a postcode, on the Pro plan: leave the postcodes empty and write its tag in Product tags.

What it does not do

The rule decides who sees the free rate. The rate and its threshold stay as you set them in Shopify.

It creates no rates and changes no prices. Free shipping is your own 0 € rate.

There is no reversed condition. In the rest of Italy, above 59 €, customers also see "Standard courier" under the free rate: hiding it would take "every postcode but the islands".

The cart total the rule reads is the one before discounts on the whole order. A code that takes 10 € off the total does not lower it.

It does not use the order's weight.

Until the customer types an address there is no postcode, so the rule does nothing yet.

The free plan gives you conditions on the cart total only. Postcodes and provinces start on Starter, product tags on Pro.
